Welcome back to another video. In this one, I'm going to be reviewing the Zoom F6. This is an audio recorder, and it is fantastic. So, we're going to dive into the features it has and why it's so amazing. If you're new here, we have over 200 videography-related videos, so lots of content for you to learn from. If you want to know any of the gear we use to make our videos, all links are in the description. Let's jump in.
First off, I would say if you are thinking about getting an audio device, this is the one to get. So, I won't waste your time. This is the one I would suggest getting. It is incredible. We use it for all our on-set client work. Why is it different than the other Zoom products that we've loved and used in the past? Well, for starters, this one can record 32-bit float. It allows you to essentially record audio in a raw format. It basically means you will never have peaked audio ever again. It's kind of mind-blowing because, like video cameras have the ability to record raw video, and then in the editing, you can change the ISO and the color temperature. On the audio side, with devices like this that record 32-bit float, it essentially does that with the audio.
When you record this, whether you're talking quietly, then all of a sudden, you know, scream into the microphone, when you get into the editing, you can literally just lower the volume for that one section, and then you're going to find that the audio is not peaked. It will be as if you turned down the dial. I have been on set several hundreds of times over the last 15 years or so, running a production company, and there have been so many times where we've gotten back to the editing room after we've recorded all day, and we find out that one of the interviews had peaked audio. Then we are like, "Oh my gosh, do we have a backup of this? Can we use the camera audio that was sort of a guide audio for syncing, or are we gonna have to do a reshoot?" Luckily, most of the time, we were able to make it work or cut that part out, but there have been a couple of times where we had to reshoot or do an ADR session where they just record that one section at that location, and we could sort of dub it over. But it's messy, it's obviously unprofessional, and it eats up a lot of time when you don't get it right on set.
So, having a device like this where you don't even need to worry about the level of the audio, for smaller budget productions, this can be a game-changer because you don't really need an audio guy anymore. Now, obviously, if you're doing a narrative thing and you have actors moving around, you're going to need an audio guy with a boom and a shotgun mic. But for everything else, like interviews, where you have just a lav or an overhead boom locked in one spot, then something like this is perfect because you can literally just set the input level to something that sounds good. You don't have to worry about it, even if the person gets very loud or they laugh at a part. In the editing, you can just literally turn it down and save that section of audio. It is amazing, and just on that feature alone, that is why we own this.
Beyond that, though, you know, it does have a lot of other features. Like, it has six XLR inputs, which comes in handy for recording a whole bunch of different inputs. Let's say you're recording several different people talking, and each one of them is wearing a lav, and then you have a boom for guide audio. Well, this little device can do all of that. In the past, you'd need some giant mixing board and all this other stuff. Well, this, just with the SD card, an internal battery, but on top of that, you can add on the back the Sony battery, which is what we use, and this thing will last for days without needing to recharge it or swap batteries. Besides that, since it's just audio, no video, the SD card, even in 32-bit float, which is a little more demanding in terms of file size, you can record literally all day on just your average SD card.
Yes, this is considered a professional device. It does have time code in and out, so you can do syncing in that way. Another cool thing about this is it has USB-C, which means you can connect this to a laptop and literally use this as your audio sound card for your computer. Which means, if you need to do a screen capture with a voice-over for a video editing tutorial or something like that, well, you can connect your mic through this, plug it into your computer, and then screen capture your screen, however you do that, let's say with OBS, but also use the XLR input through the USB-C PC into your computer as your input device. That's pretty handy in terms of an extra feature.
I won't bore you with all the other features that this has because any typical audio device nowadays will have all those standard internal settings to apply on the different audio tracks, as well as changing the formats and the quality and all that. It has these rails, so you can put a strap through, which makes it easy to carry if, let's say, you want to have this connected to a camera bag or a belt or something because you're doing camera operating. I love that it has the internal battery. If you're using it like we do with the Sony battery, then the internal AA batteries will give you another battery source, meaning that you never have to worry about this thing randomly turning off while you're recording.
I have to say, in regards to audio gear, this is my favorite piece of gear that we own. I will leave the link in the description for the exact model that we have. This is the Zoom F6, and yeah, it is fantastic. I would highly recommend it.
