Customize, Animate and Export Shapes in DaVinci Resolve 20 - Alli will teach you how to customize your own shapes and how to animate and export them in the Fusion page of DaVinci Resolve!
I'm going to show you two super easy ways to animate both hand-drawn shapes and more proper, professional-looking shapes in Resolve. If you're new here, I'm Ally and Will, and I release weekly DaVinci Resolve tutorials as well as gear reviews. If you're into that sort of thing, subscribe to stay in the loop.
Now let's hop into Resolve.
We're in Fusion. Let's drag a background into our node graph, move this media out node over a little bit, and grab our paintbrush tool. Now, you don't want to just click on it like I did because then it will be placed over here, which we don't want. So I'm just going to press Command-Z to undo that.
Let's drag our paintbrush in between these two nodes like this. Okay, that's nice and connected. Up here, select Stroke. And by default, our stroke line is set to white and a little soft, as you can see. Not really feeling it, so I'm going to press Command-Z to undo that.
Let's click in the color box, and we can choose a different color. Okay, now let's open the Brush Controls drop-down menu, and we can adjust the softness level as well as the size of the stroke with these sliders. And you have to change the size, softness, color, and so on before you draw.
But coming up, I'm going to show you how to change those parameters for an already existing line or shape or whatever.
Anyway, for now, open Stroke Controls and change Stroke Animation to Right On. This is going to allow our animation to show on screen the way you would read — so from left to right. Increase the duration. I'm going to go with around 30 so that it plays over 30 frames.
I'll draw a line. How exciting. And when I bring my cursor to the beginning here and press the space bar to play, you can see how it's looking. And you can do any shape here. So just going to undo that.
You could do a circle if you wanted to, or let's do a square. You've got lots of different options. Going to undo again, so we have a blank canvas, and I will draw three lines here.
Now let's say I want to change this first line. I can't just try and select it and go into color, change the color. Look, it's not doing anything. So what you have to do is click up here to open up your keyframe viewer. There it is. Where it says Paint 1, click this drop-down menu, and now you can see your different strokes.
Just so you know, you can use this slider up here to get a closer look at what's going on over here. Okay, so I have my third stroke selected. And now, when you go over to color, you can change it to whatever you'd like. Okay, you can increase the size, softness — you've got lots of options.
Now let's select Stroke 2. I'll change the color again. Okay, awesome.
So just remember, if you want to make changes to your shapes, you've got to go into keyframes to do so. That's how simple it is to create a sort of hand-drawn, messier look for your animated shapes.
If you want your shape to look less hand-drawn and more proper and professional, let's first drop our background node down. We can choose the background color. Whatever color you pick is going to be the color of your shape — you'll see in a sec.
And up here we have a few different options for types of shapes we can choose. We could choose Polygon and draw our own shape like this. Just going to undo that. You can check out these other shapes. I'm going to drag the Ellipse shape down and connect it to the background.
When you do that, the background takes on the shape. If you want to adjust the height, width, or size, you can click on any of the edges and drag them in or out, up or down. You can also use these sliders in the Inspector here.
Let's uncheck Solid and adjust the Border Width to create an outline of this circle. You can also adjust the softness here. And let's animate it by bringing our playhead to the beginning here, dragging the Length slider to zero, adding a keyframe to hold the circle length at this frame.
Now let's bring our cursor, I don't know, 10 frames ahead, and drag the Length slider to one. And when we click away, another keyframe is automatically placed to hold this new length in place at the 10th frame here.
Let's check this out. Great. Super simple.
Now let's export this shape as an alpha channel so that there's no background, just the animated circle. Go to the Deliver page. And I just want to mention, there are a few different ways to export alpha channels. Depending on your computer, some might work better than others. If you want to learn more exporting alpha options, check out this video next.
Okay, just going to name this file. Under the Video tab, change Format to QuickTime. Change Codec to DNxHR. And last but not least, make sure Export Alpha is checkmarked. If you don't, your exported shape will include this black background.
Press Add to Render Queue and Render All. Okay, it's finished.
I'm going to go back over to the Edit page. Right-click in my Media Pool, import media, select my animated shape, open, and drag it over top of this white solid here so it's easy to see. So because this is an alpha, you could put your animated shape over footage — whatever background you prefer, really.
What are you going to use your animated shapes for? I'm curious. Let me know in the comments below.
I hope this video was helpful to you. If it was, let us know by giving us a thumbs up. Subscribe for weekly DaVinci Resolve tutorials and gear reviews.
I hope you have a lovely day, and we'll see you in the next video.
