Make Footage Look OLD In DaVinci Resolve - Vintage Video Tutorial - In this video editing tutorial, Will teaches you how to create old looking footage using effects in DaVinci Resolve. It's very easy to do and you can get many different looks quickly.
In today's Da Vinci Resolve video, I'm going to teach you how to make your footage look old, like VHS tapes or vintage, like back in the day with film cameras. If you're new here, we have over 200 videography-related videos, so lots of content for you to learn from. And if you want to know any of the equipment we use to make our videos, all links are in the description. Let's jump in.
To get started, let's head over to the edit page inside Resolve. I have one clip of a sunset loaded. This is a color-corrected and graded clip. My goal here is to teach you quickly how you can make your footage look old if you're going for that vintage look. So we can do that by applying a bunch of effects and changing some of the parameters. So over here in the effects area, if you don't have that, you can click on effects at the top, and we'll go down to just below where it says open effects, into the filters, and we will scroll down until we see the section called resolve effects film emulation. And there's a really cool effect called film damage. So we will apply that. And instantly, you can see that it darkened the clip and added a bunch of other things, like these little artifacts and the classic film lines. So that already is doing a pretty good job.
If you want, you can go into the effect settings and increase the softness, the blur that it's added. You can change the vignetting, as well as the amount of debris in the footage. And if you want to add more than one line, you can do it back here by adding a second scratch. You can enable it and then change the position. And then, of course, we want it to be moving. So we will enable moving. We'll reduce the speed. Then we will add some film grain. And then we'll bring up the opacity so that the grain shows a little more. We'll add a bit of flicker, but the default settings are very strong. So we will reduce the speed to almost nothing.
Okay, that's looking good. We'll add some hellation. And you can play around with the settings if you'd like, but I do think the default settings look good in terms of the bleeding colors into the other areas of the footage. And then from there, we will scroll down all the way to the area called resolve effects texture. And there's a setting here called analog damage, which I am a big fan of. Then over in the effects panel, we will bring down some of the settings here. First, we'll check out the presets. And this can give you some very, very drastic changes to your footage. So as you can see, there's a ton of options. I'm a fan of the old VHS look. Although the scan lines, over time, they pop into your frame, which doesn't look good by the end of a longer clip. So I tend to turn those off. And if you go into broadcast signal, you can once again make a whole bunch of changes, such as the amount of noise or chroma noise. Then from there, under color, you can change some of the brightness, contrast, etc.
Now, if you do want to have those film look borders, once again, you can go back up to the film look creator. This is a very easy effect to work with. And you basically just go to clean slate and then down into the film gate and enable film gate. And there's a whole bunch of settings here for different options. And then that, mixed in with the gate weave, can give you an old vintage look in just a few clicks.
And that's how you can make your footage look vintage inside Da Vinci Resolve. If you found it helpful, give it a like and subscribe. And if you're new here, we have over 200 videography-related videos, so lots of content and other tutorials that you can learn from. And if you want to know any of the music or the equipment we use to make our videos, all links are in the description. Thanks so much for watching, and we'll see you next time.
